Barn Quilt Making

For one of the Saturday classes, I lead the lesson.  This day we made barn quilt squares that represent their partner based off of a partner sheet everyone filled out.  This sheet had the students initials, favorite color, three words that describe them, and their favorite hobby.  For the artwork, I had the students focus on using color association, organic shapes, and asymmetry.

Monster, Background, and Story

For this project, my partners and I had the students make 3D monsters using cardboard boxes, textured materials, and paint.  The students then made backgrounds for their monsters using cardboard and paint.  After the monster and background were made, we had the students think of a story for their monster using a introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion.  For this projects, we focused on the use of textured material and story telling.

SATURDAY CLASS CLASSROOM SET-UP DOCUMENTATION
IPTS Standard 4 - Learning Environment - The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal setting.
7D: understands how to organize the instructional environment to maximize students’ learning.

For our classroom, we follow the CDC advice of having the students spaced apart.  We also gave the students large areas to work on by combining desks and having their own desks.  For our second classroom we worked on tables with a large surface area.  This made it easier to have access to the materials and larger area to paint.

PROFESSIONALISM, ADVOCACY & LEADERSHIP: PAL 1  (2 submissions)
IPTS Standard 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy - The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.

For my first PAL 1, I went to a presentation held by Illinois State University for White Sight by Nicholas Mirzoeff. This presentation covered Simone de Beauvoir, “one is not born but becomes white.” This talk engages the persistence and continued force of white ways of seeing and making white space. Combined, these form what Mirzoeff calls “white sight.” To be white has been imagined as the apex of the supposed pyramid of the human. That is a powerful place from which to see, survey, and conduct surveillance, the key practices of white sight. It is a system that has a material infrastructure, connecting ways of seeing and making space and the apparatus of government. Its material forms connect, distribute, enable, and store the set of desires and fantasies that comprise what it is to make whiteness. This talk examines how these systems work and how they might be unbuilt.

For my second PAL 1, I went to another presentation held by Illinois State University for Rachel Bujalski.  Rachel Bujalski is a documentary photographer and filmmaker specializing in long-form storytelling with a focus in highlighting the commonalities of humanity across age, gender, race, nationality, and socio-economic status. In her ongoing series But What Does Tomorrow Hold, a project about people living in limbo on the edges of American society, Bujalski meets people to engage in conversation and create images to provide insight into where society decides to turn a blind eye.

PROFESSIONALISM, ADVOCACY & LEADERSHIP: PAL 2  (2 submissions)
IPTS Standard 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy - The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.

For my first PAL 2, I volunteered at the annual poster sale held by the Art Education Program.  I helped organize posters and restock them in the correct spot.  This was held at the beginning of September and was a lot of fun to do outside of class.

My second PAL 2 was done along with Ebony Flowers, where we did an exercise on spacial awareness and how to engage students in thinking about their day and making art, specifically comics.
