HOIC Teaching
Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 3 - Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.

On February 25th, my partner and I lead two classes for the HOIC Conference.  Here we taught a lesson based off the art of JonOne and many other graffiti artists.  We encouraged the students to thinks less about legibility when creating their piece, and more on the moment of the art.

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Description:

My unit plan is based off the artwork of Sarah Morris and Bridget Riley.  The plan is made for an eight grade class and focuses on the use of color theory and pattern making.  This will give the students choices on color, design, and materials they can use.

LIBRARY SCALE DRAWING TEACHING

At the Normal Public Library, I taught one student how to use a pencil to scale a object and transfer is onto their paper.  We used ebony pencils, colored pencils, and chalk pastels for shading and color on different days.  This was done over the course of three Thursdays with my ART 309 classmates.

LITERACY LESSON

For the literacy lesson, I am having the students look at the artwork One Small Step by Bridget Riley.  Here they will look at the artwork and come up with some adjectives to describe the work's colors, shapes, and composition.  They will then take the adjectives they have come up with and create a descriptive paragraph about the artwork using the adjectives. They are doing this lesson to work on literacy and being able to use descriptive work for artwork in the future

HOIC EXHIBIT
Before teaching for HOIC, there was an exhibition held to show the students work.  These artworks were made by the students coming in for HOIC and showed off their style and their form of art.  There was tradition works like drawing, painting, and ceramic.  There were also modern art, like digital drawing and photography.  I went because I wanted to see what the students, I was about to teach, art styles were.

IHSAE CENTRAL REGIONAL EXHIBIT

This exhibition is co-sponsored by the IHSAE and the Illinois Art Education Association Central Council. All registered schools can submit up to 20 student artworks to be included in the exhibition.  This was held at ISU in the CVA.  I went because I wanted to see art from all over the state and from different districts.

NAEA VALENTINE SOCIAL

At the social, we made Valentines Day cards for senior citizens that live in Normal, IL.  I made two cards for the home and sent them along with everyone else cards.  I did this so I could help out NAEA with their social event and sent some cards out.

NAEA BOARD

NAEA wanted to change the board around due to it not being changed for 3-4 years.  We decided to cover it with 5x5 pieces of art to show off what we like to do for art and what the NAEA is about.  There was no prompt for the artworks, just grab some 5x5 and help set up the board.  I did this to help NAEA with their board and show what the association was about.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

This is my own ideals about teaching in the art classroom.   I say this due to how I feel art could be portrayed without deeper meaning.

My philosophy on teaching art is that every piece of art does not need a deep meaning or reason behind its creation.  I believe students learn best when they have freedom of choice, where they can choose whether to make an emotional piece or just like creating art for the sake of art.  My role as an educator is to help students understand their intentions behind making art and that it is ok to have unclear reasoning behind making artwork.  My goal for the students is to feel comfortable about their work and not feel pressured to create deep meanings when there is none behind the piece.
